Communication

Hood Nurse: Okay, ma'am, I'm gonna give you some medicine right now. The first thing I'm going to do is give you some IV fluids. It's very important to stay hydrated when you have a fever and an infection, so this will help with that. The other medicine I'm giving is called Rocephin. It's an antibiotic to help fight the infection.
Patient, to her husband: Ask her to tell me what these medicines are for.

  1. Ever see the movie "The Out of Towners"? Well there's a scene where they're in their daughter's apartment building and the nosy neighbors come out and do basically the same routine.

Wife to Husband : "Ask her who she is"
    Husband: "Who are you"

  2. Have you heard the 20/80 rule? 20% of the people have 80% of the brains. I think that applies here (ruling out a hearing problem of course.)

  5. Classic!!!! Times like that patients often don't hear what you think they hear...and yes...was her hearing aid turned on?

  6. This was not an old person. Hearing was definitely not the problem, although otherwise she was a very nice patient.

  7. And the govt expects hospitals to excel at HCAHPS scores with patients like these??? Sigh.
