There's Something Wrong

with a grown ass man who checks into the ER for pink eye and then has his mama go up to the triage desk and yell and scream and act a fool demanding to see the freaking house supervisor and asking for the complaint line because someone who walked in with a gun shot wound was triaged before her son. REALLY?
Also, with an adult woman who is legally allowed to drive a car trying to tell me her kid needed antibiotics to fix his neck soreness after a car accident.
And with people who bring in their family members because acting strange and agitated after drinking an 18 pack of beer, and then get pissed of when they aren't immediately taken back to a room.
We have a nurse here who works triage exclusively. That completely blows my mind. If I had to deal with this shit every day, I would probably be done with humanity and nursing after about 2 weeks.

  1. Pink eye!
I can't believe how many whinny patients there are these days and most of them are young men. An old women with a broken hip takes pain better than most men.

  2. Truly a testament to the poor socialization of the majority of today’s crop of adults. I too would lose it if I had to deal with that crapola all day or night long. Thanks for doing a thankless job and doing it well.

  3. unbelievable.

But then, I have stopped numerous men of the same description from running off to ED with the same complaint and even smaller stuff....

Many times I have to top off the end of the shift with a glass of vino just to keep me from screaming....

  4. NPO, that is so true. I take care of so many little old ladies with broken hips who are totally calm and polite, while the healthy young man in the next bed with a boil on his butt is screaming for more pain meds. It is amazing!

  5. Oh, we have a full time triage nurse who works every weekend. There is no way she would ever get out of her chair to work in the back. She sits in her triage box all day long on some weird ass message board with vampires on it. She doesn't even get up to survey the place, make sure nobody has died in the waiting room. She over head pages patients on the intercom to come to her. She places patients by going room 1, room 2, etc, no matter that poor nurse who just got 5 patients in 5 minutes into their rooms. She's the laziest ED nurse I've ever seen in my life. And the worst part is they pay her $3 more an hour for that job.

  6. I dunno, if I wanted to write short stories or a novel, maybe a triage job would offer good material!

  7. two weeks, more like two days, seriously you would need to have your ipod in and on full blast to deal with idiots like this all day long.

  8. Come on, Ms. Hoodnurse. You work in a ghetto hospital, which means you get tons of leeway to throw abusive family members, etc. out on their asses. My rule is if you would get thrown out of Victoria's Secret for acting that way, you can't act that way to me either. There's no special disorderly conduct rule for family members in an ER. Sometimes I'm in a nice mood and give ya one chance, but lots of times, nope, yo butt be getting hauled outside.

  9. If I worked in triage all the time I would jump off the hospital roof or push one of the idiot triagees off the roof.

  10. Oh my gosh Rachedy, I want to get $3/hr extra to work triage. God, I hate triage. I'd rather be in charge than be out there. And every single 12 hr shift, I'm either out there or in charge for part of it.

  11. K, I wish it was this way. Our hospital security leaves quite a bit to be desired. Rarely are the po-po up in triage, and when they are they pretty much just politely ask the hoodrats to stop acting foolish. There's about 3 cops in total that actually do a damn thing, and other than that we're pretty much on our own.
